Timeline

Indian Premier League’s clash between its two most-rivaling clubs has long been eagerly anticipated by both their supporters as well as tournament viewers worldwide. Since 2008 when this franchise-based Twenty20 cricket tournament first kicked off, this match-up has never failed to deliver on its hype and promises of excitement and thrills.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will meet for their eighth and 52nd league matches of this season at MA Chidambaram Stadium and M Chinnaswamy Stadium, respectively. Both sides currently find themselves at different spots on the points table – RCB targeting top two finish while CSK already on verge of elimination.

RCB have taken seven wins out of their 10 league matches thus far thanks to consistent bowler performances under Rajat Patidar’s guidance, thanks to Josh Hazlewood, Yash Dayal and spinners Suyash Sharma and Krunal Pandya – making an attempt at their fourth successive title run.

Ayush Mhatre’s magnificent 94 and his unbroken partnership of 114 runs with Ravindra Jadeja helped CSK reach 211/5 in their allotted 20 overs, but unfortunately for them could not finish off the match and lost by two runs.

With their win, RCB have surged ahead to take 16 points in the points table and can enjoy a brief respite before they take on Lucknow Super Giants at Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium on Friday 9 May 2025. CSK are in danger of going the entire season without winning and will look to reverse that trend when they travel to Eden Gardens to take on Kolkata Knight Riders on Wednesday, 7th May, 2025.

Matches

Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Chennai Super Kings share one of the fiercest rivalries in Indian Premier League history, often dubbed as ‘Southern Derby.’ Their games have produced high-octane thrills and legendary performances on both sides.

This match was no different; led by Lungi Ngidi and supported by Krunal Pandya, RCB’s bowling proved too strong for CSK batting line-up to match, giving RCB an early lead. But with several key players missing from CSK side due to injury issues, CSK quickly clawed its way back into contention due to MS Dhoni’s unstoppable strokeplay and resumed their chase of victory.

Ngidi responded in the third over of CSK’s innings by taking two key wickets – Ruturaj Gaikwad and Rahul Tripathi – that effectively killed CSK’s innings as they fell two runs short of victory.

With their win at MA Chidambaram Stadium, RCB managed to end a 17-year losing streak at home and take another step toward qualifying for playoffs. Meanwhile, CSK suffered multiple home defeats this season for the first time ever.

Early in the day, Yashdayal Chawla denied Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja the chance to reach 200 runs and win for their side at Chepauk – this being his second successful attempt this year – it proved crucial in both teams’ pursuit of victory.

In IPL history, RCB and CSK have met 33 times, with CSK taking home 21 wins over their rival. Meanwhile, RCB have managed just 7 victories with one no result match to show for their efforts; but their fierce rivalry always promises exciting matches to watch with two passionate fan bases supporting both teams! Here is a glimpse at some key moments from these epic battles over time.
