Tests
These high-voltage test matches between these veteran teams are always thrilling to watch, whether at the cricket ground in Melbourne or an exciting Twenty20 International (T20I).
Each game draws audiences of cricket fans worldwide; Australia has proven themselves supreme by winning most tests (71 out of 111) with only 24 victories for Pakistan while there have been three draws.
Matt Short’s impressive form this season will provide Australia’s batting with a significant boost, giving their newly assembled batting order a fresh start.
Additionally, Fraser-McGurk and Sean Abbott return from NSW Sheffield Shield performances and will bring something extra special.
Pakistan will need their bowlers to step up. Their national batsmen, with the exception of Ijaz Ahmed, have found life tough in Australian conditions with Husnain gaining some confidence from her Champions One Day Cup performance while Aamer Jamal seems at home in these conditions while other players such as Shaheen Naseem Rauf may get overwhelmed in this series.
ODIs
Australia will field their strongest side for Monday’s inaugural ODI against Pakistan in Melbourne since defeating England 5-0 at Bristol last February.
Pat Cummins returns, with Victorian teammates Matt Short and Jake Fraser-McGurk opening up in national colours for the first time – both openers have come under scrutiny due to their cavalier batting styles; their powerful Powerplay has been key factor behind Australia’s recent success in ODI cricket.
The squad features pace bowlers Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc and Cooper Connolly while Marnus Labuschagne, Aaron Hardie and Glenn Maxwell will likely remain as back-up options.
All-rounder Ben Hilfer will remain part of the side while spinner Saim Abbas will make up part of its playing XI for matches in Adelaide and Perth respectively.
However, Test stars Steven Smith and Mitchell Marsh will miss Western Australia as they prepare for two Test series against India starting next month in Sydney.
Pakistan, though ranked second by the International Cricket Council, has struggled against Australia despite being second in their respective world rankings.
Their poor batting form has been compounded by a lack of specialist spinner who can control Australia’s favorable conditions; as a result, Pakistani top orders have struggled to score runs, while middle and lower orders have been battered for runs by Australia;
Moreover, without any wicket-taking options during middle overs, Pakistan will struggle to contain Australian batsmen effectively.
T20Is
Australia continued their T20I dominance by defeating Pakistan 3-0. Even though the series was played on foreign soil, Australia were able to triumph thanks to amazing performances from David Warner and Aaron Finch.
Marcus Stoinis recorded an unbeaten 61 off 27 balls as Australia chased down an easy target of 183 runs at Hobart.
Australia have won 14 of 28 T20 Internationals against India; 14 have resulted in draws. Both teams have shown great intensity when competing against one another in this format – providing some of the most dramatic cricket ever witnessed on these shores.
Since their first meeting in 1956, Australia and Pakistan have shared an unforgettable rivalry that has produced some unforgettable cricketing moments – some were dramatic defeats while others saw thrilling comebacks and nail-biting finishes.
Yet their rivalry still thrives and remains one of the most captivating rivalries in international cricket.
Australia and Pakistan have met in 28 T20Is, with Australia winning 14 and Pakistan 13. Both sides are evenly matched in this format; rarely has a game ended without any clear result.
Both teams will look to take an important step forward in this series. Australia are without several of their Test players – including captain Josh Inglis – but Cooper Connolly, Matt Prior and Matthew Wade will still be available for selection in this match-up.
Pakistan have made some key additions, with fast bowler Abbas Afridi joining Jahandar Khan while middle-order batsmen Usman Khan and Omair Yousuf could provide extra firepower.
Tri-Series
Australia and Pakistan’s tri-series battle has produced some close and thrilling encounters that have highlighted their fierce rivalry, featuring epic matches and legendary performances across formats, with numerous close contests that have highlighted this competition’s keen edge.
The tri-series tournament was an annual staple in Australian one day international (ODI) cricket until 2007. Hosted during summer months and consisting of round robin play between Australia and a touring team from abroad, with finals determined using best of three series, it first introduced during Kerry Packer’s World Series Cricket era and continued through until it was discontinued following 2007-08 season.
Australia have won 20 of the 31 tri-series played so far, while West Indies are second with six victories. Most recently in 2015-16 at Melbourne Cricket Ground against Windies they secured victory thanks to dominant performances by their batting and bowling units and by many legends like Chappell brothers and Lillee. This home series victory made history.
World Cup
Australia have dominated the World Cup, winning six times from 1999-2007 and twice more between 2015-2023. They reached the quarter finals on three of those occasions; Pakistan participated in all six world cups but only ever managed one win (in 1992).
They currently rank fifth in the ICC ODI rankings.
Australian and British teams met for their opening group match at Leeds. Australia won the toss and elected to bat first, taking an impressive start led by Alan Turner, Rick McCosker and Ian Chappell’s top order batsmen to reach 278/7; however middle and lower order batting collapsed drastically, as bowlers did their work and brought down that total to just 205 runs.
Pakistan looked set for victory until rain intervened and forced play to stop, creating an epic batsmen and fielders battle that saw Shahid Afridi and Saqlain Mushtaq both score hat-tricks during this match.
Australia outshone Pakistan by winning with ease and qualifying for the semi-finals due to carrying forward points from group matches and results against non-qualifying teams; their semi-final match was against England which they easily won by 110 runs.
