Cricket was introduced to India during the nineteenth century by Europeans stationed in what was then known as the Presidency.

An annual tournament, known as a Triangular when Parsis and Muslims were included, became widely watched by locals including members of military regiments – some even taking up playing themselves and trying to emulate what their ‘rulers’ were doing on the field.

Govan and de Mello tried in 1932 to convince Kumar Shri Duleepsinhji, nephew of Ranji, to lead India to England for its inaugural tour, but the ‘prince’ declined. Instead, he captained India in three-match series played within India between 1933/4.

Kapil Dev made his Test debut during that tour and entered into an extremely difficult situation as England declared their first innings at 653/4. Asked to follow-on and on 183/6 himself, Dev did not lose his nerve and went on to score an outstanding 119 not out; an exceptional achievement that still stands the test of time.

England was decimated in a subsequent series, as India’s batting weaknesses were exposed and James Anderson and Stuart Broad took advantage of them to give India its first Test series loss since 1968.

New Zealand whitewashed them, then Australia beat them three-1 – this loss marked India’s first in England since 1968.

India returned to Old Trafford a year later with an aim in mind – determined to avenge their defeat and restore their honor on home turf.

What ensued was one of the greatest victories in Test history – India’s maiden win at Old Trafford as part of an historic series victory that would further cement India’s standing globally.
