India

New Zealand cricket team features many notable names that are widely considered among the best in the world, most notably Brendon McCullum and Kane Williamson, both having amassed more than 300 Test runs for their nation while ranking among the top ten ODI batsmen of all time.

Recent Kiwi success at home includes an impressive 5-0 series win against West Indies in 2021 and 2-1 against India at the same venue in 2022. Unfortunately, their performance at international tournaments outside their own backyard has been less impressive, losing both an ODI series against Pakistan (2024) and then against England (2025).

However, the team still boasts an outstanding domestic structure with strong competition in Ranji Trophy and IPL tournaments. Young players eager to succeed and show great promise are supported by veteran players such as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in big games.

India will look to extend their dominance when they meet New Zealand in the ICC Champions Trophy final on Sunday in Dubai. Both teams have met several times during this tournament’s history and never disappoint – this match promises to be another thrilling spectacle! Both sides will look to add further successes to their growing lists.

India and New Zealand have faced off in 65 tests, with India winning 22 times and New Zealand 16; 27 matches ended up as draws. On the ICC World Test Championship points table, India holds on to first place with 58% while Bangladesh and Sri Lanka trail far behind, Bangladesh holding onto second and Sri Lanka third respectively.

Their impressive 2-0 series victory over Bangladesh on Tuesday at Kanpur cemented India’s place at the top. No longer do Bangladesh take India lightly!

New Zealand

India’s victory at the T20 World Cup has reignited their rivalry with New Zealand. This series will be crucial for both teams and will surely provide plenty of entertainment. Indian captain Rohit Sharma will look to build on this momentum and win another Test series while young talent such as Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill look set to lead Team India to success.

New Zealand are currently second in ICC Test rankings and third in ODI rankings, as per ICC. Their national cricket team, known as the Black Caps, have appeared in multiple ICC finals without success yet; but have a fantastic domestic system through Ranji Trophy and IPL to showcase talent that could potentially shine on an international stage.

New Zealand first played their inaugural Test match against Australia in 1945/46; though not officially considered a Test at the time, this match would later receive Test status retrospectively in March 1948. New Zealand prevailed, led by Ron Hadlee who took nine wickets in Australia’s first innings while also scoring 100 runs for their own innings! Ron made history again by scoring 100 runs in his only attempt for New Zealand!

Black Caps players have worn different uniforms during ODIs. One notable uniform, popularised by Beige Brigade fans and worn from 1980-1988, was beige and brown, although later teal with black accents became their choice of uniforms.

New Zealand national cricket team has an outstanding track record of playing competitive cricket across all formats. However, their particular strength lies in one-day internationals (ODIs) and Twenty20 internationals (T20s), where they often challenge for victory against stronger opposition.

Over recent seasons they’ve come close on multiple occasions, so their performance this series will be crucial if they wish to advance further towards reaching the ICC World Cup final.

ODIs

India and New Zealand have played 119 One Day Internationals between them; India won 61 games while New Zealand claimed 50 victories, with seven ending in ties. New Zealand defeated India to win their inaugural Champions Trophy title back in 2000; now, both teams are set to face-off once more at the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy final and expect an equally exciting matchup!

India boasts the highest winning percentage in ODIs with 66% and holds the most victories among all teams with 65 victories overall. Their average runs per innings average is 287 runs, second only to Australia. Their team features several talented players like Virat Kohli who is currently ranked fourth globally in this respect.

Rohit Sharma has been appointed captain of India’s One Day International team following Virat Kohli’s return as Test captain. Rohit will face Sri Lanka, England, South Africa, and Bangladesh during upcoming ODI series, and Rohit is hoping that his experience can turn around recent poor performances of the team – by introducing youngsters such as Krunal Pandya and Hardik Pandya into his squad.

As a result, India is now the fourth-ranked ODI team worldwide and have won two out of three ICC Champions Trophy finals. If India wants to reach the semi-finals at 2021 or 2023 ICC T20 World Cups they must improve on their performances during these tournaments.

India will play Sri Lanka at Colombo’s R Premadasa Stadium before facing England at Edgbaston and West Indies at The Oval. At present, they sit fourth in the ICC Test Rankings with 107 rating points; to break into the top three will require five more Test victories, an unlikely feat indeed.

New Zealand won their last Test match against Zimbabwe at Bulawayo back in August 2015; Brendon McCullum recorded New Zealand’s inaugural triple hundred score during this match against Zimbabwe – against Zimbabwe at Bulawayo two months before India defeated them in 2014 ICC World Cup final against India. Brendon McCullum made history when New Zealand beat Zimbabwe 3 days later!

India boasts a deep pool of talented players and hopes to establish itself as one of the premier teams worldwide. India boasts the IPL and Ranji Trophy tournaments as domestic competitions that regularly produce young prospects hungry to perform and win; India hopes this can translate to dominance across all three formats following winning T20 World Cup last year.

The Black Caps have taken part in 65 tests against India, winning 22 and drawing 27 matches respectively. Their battles over time have always provided fans with thrilling entertainment – it never gets old seeing these two sides square off!

After winning the T20 World Cup, India will return to Test action against Bangladesh and New Zealand during September and October series respectively, before hosting both teams again for another crucial series that may determine their spot in the 2027 World Test Championship final.

Rohit Sharma has assumed leadership of both Tests and ODIs under new captain Rohit Sharma and will look to add more trophies to his collection. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill, making their debuts for New Zealand against an aggressive Indian team will provide additional strength.
