Timeline

The Kolkata Knight Riders-Sunrisers Hyderabad rivalry has become one of the most anticipated fixtures of Indian Premier League. From dramatic finishes to individual brilliance, each encounter between these teams adds new chapters to their longstanding history. As both sides grew and developed over time, their meetings became even more anticipated each season.

Since the start of IPL, KKR and SRH have faced off 28 times against one another since its inaugural edition. Of those encounters, 18 have gone to KKR while 9 have gone to SRH; making them both some of the most successful teams ever seen in IPL history. Their first meeting occurred at Eden Gardens on April 14, 2013 where Chris Lynn led his side to victory by 10 wickets.

In their next match at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, KKR comprehensively defeated SRH with an innings win by 109 runs. Shikhar Dhawan scored an outstanding 68 runs while Bhuvneshwar Kumar contributed three wickets for a comfortable win for KKR – this defeat dealt a devastating blow to Shreyas Iyer-led SRH who had kicked off their season so strongly.

In 2021, both teams faced each other again in an exciting second meeting between them; SRH prevailed by six wickets before KKR showed their resilience by defeating them by only 110 runs – led by Chris Lynn who once more led their efforts, while Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Shikhar Dhawan contributed crucial wickets.

On May 25th 2025, KKR and SRH met again for their final clash of 2025 season in Delhi for what turned out to be a dead rubber and final game of their respective seasons. While KKR went undefeated throughout, losing only two out of 13 games (and failing to qualify for play-offs), which meant they must wait until 2026 season to defend their titles (first time defending since 2008!). The match will be broadcast live across India by Star Sports Network as well as streaming online via JioHotstar platform.

Venue

Last year’s finalists, Kolkata Knight Riders and Sunrisers Hyderabad will both be fighting to remain relevant at the end of IPL 2025 season. Both have experienced ups and downs during their title defense campaigns and currently sit seventh and eighth on points table respectively; with wins potentially pushing either team into sixth spot. They’ll certainly want to end it on a positive note!

The match will take place at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi and features an expected pitch favourable to bowlers; therefore, it will be intriguing to see who wins the toss. KKR are hoping Quinton de Kock can bolster their top order following his injury during their previous match against Mumbai Indians; on the other hand SRH are looking to create more attacking cricket with players such as Ishan Kishan, Travis Head and Heinrich Klaasen in their lineup.

SRH will be led by pacers Pat Cummins and Harsh Dubey in terms of bowling, while spinners Varun Chakaravarthy and Simarjeet Singh will play an integral part. There are also quality players like Aniket Verma and Vijay Shankar available who could prove vital during crucial moments for their team.

Mohammed Shami will return as an invaluable asset for Sunrisers Hyderabad after missing IPL 2024 due to an ankle injury. With his right-arm fast bowler ability and capacity to derail any batting line-up, Mohammed will undoubtedly play a significant role in SRH this time around.

Both teams stand a strong chance at making it into the playoffs, but to do so they must improve their consistency over the final three matches. KKR’s batting has been inconsistent, while SRH bowlers have struggled as a unit. A thrilling contest will ensue between these sides, guaranteed to excite fans all around India – watch live streamed coverage via Disney+ Hotstar, JioCinema and Star Sports One mobile apps, all available worldwide with match highlights and interviews available post match.

Match-by-match analysis

KKR and SRH have met 28 times throughout IPL history, with KKR winning 19 out of these encounters. This head-to-head record provides valuable insight into their rivalry as well as being an effective way of identifying trends or patterns in their overall performance.

SRH completed their season by beating Mumbai Indians and finishing fifth place overall in the standings. Their play was often inconsistent but was buoyed by Vijay Shankar and Ishan Kishan’s heroics – although their inability to find an adequate middle order cost them a place in a play-off spot.

KKR endured a difficult title defense campaign with ups and downs throughout. Although they started strong, their inconsistent play and inability to adapt under pressure left them scrambling for results on multiple occasions before falling short of securing victory.

Kolkata were in danger of missing out on a top four finish, but their final game against LSG proved decisive in turning things around. Their bowlers excelled and batsmen responded with memorable innings that set up victory. Now defending champions Kolkata will look to build on this victory and take it into their next match against SRH.

Rohit Sharma and Moeen Ali won’t be part of SRH’s squad this time around, so they may choose the same eleven that defeated RCB and LSG. That would leave Shikhar Dhawan as opener while Abhishek Sharma, Jasdeep Singh, and Jaydev Unadkat will provide support from their spinners’ end.

KKR only conceded seven runs in their opening over due to good fielding efforts and excellent catching. Jaydev Unadkat took one wicket early in his second over, trapping Quinton de Kock leg before tossing him out of play.

Ajinkya Rahane will look to build upon his success against KKR after leading the IPL 2024 batting charts. Venkatesh Iyer, Ramandeep Singh and Andre Russell all struggled during their respective seasons but will attempt to recapture form ahead of knockout stage play-offs.

Predictions

Defending Champions have struggled both on bat and ball this season and currently find themselves in the bottom half of the points table, winning only one match so far and hoping to improve in subsequent ones. Their other 2024 Finalist Sunrisers Hyderabad also experienced an underwhelming start, sitting eighth. On October 7, both teams will square off against each other in a dead rubber match that won’t have any real bearing on the rest of tournament’s outcome; nevertheless, each will hope that turning things around can prove decisive in turning things around

This match should produce high scores as both teams are known for their aggressive style of play. Both squads boast powerful batting lineups featuring notable names like Andre Russell and Abhishek Sharma – however, Abhishek Sharma may miss out due to form issues.

Eden Gardens is known for being a batting-friendly venue and the team winning the toss should elect to bat first on this pitch, which has shown some improvement since their previous match there and may offer assistance for spinners on slow days. Eden Gardens may also present the chance for teams chasing targets of around 200.

Both KKR and SRH will try to establish an unassailable lead early, using their top batters as weapons in powerplay overs.

Sunil Narine and Rahmanullah Gurbaz of KKR should dominate the Powerplay overs, while Mohammad Shami and Pat Cummins will likely play key roles for SRH in their second innings. Both sides should aim to maximise their chances of hitting sixes with Paddy Power offering an “Most Match Fours” market (2.1).

Batting first should prevail in this matchup, with both teams boasting strong batting lineups that average above league average. KKR may struggle in pressure situations and could lose momentum during middle overs, while SRH will rely heavily on players like Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, Nitish Reddy and Heinrich Klaasen to pose a formidable threat to any opposition team.
