Mumbai Indians vs Punjab Kings

Qualifier 2 was of immense significance, even for teams already qualifying for playoffs; Punjab Kings needed to defeat Mumbai Indians to ensure top two finish in tournament, while MI needed it to avoid Eliminator match-up. Punjab Kings’ clinical performance ensured they overtook Mumbai Indians’ score easily and ran them close.

Punjab Kings won the toss and elected to bat first, racing their way to 214 in just over 21 overs thanks to Liam Livingstone’s explosive unbeaten 82 and Jitesh Sharma’s blistering 49.

Ishan Kishan then made his presence felt, scoring 75 off 54 balls to give MI an easy victory within 18.5 overs.

Rain interrupted play for two hours but once play resumed it became an exciting contest. Both sides traded blows in the powerplay with some boundaries going for runs here and there; ESPNcricinfo’s Forecaster predicted an innings total of over 220 by MI with Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma playing leading roles.

Arshdeep Singh and Marco Jansen of PBKS quickly put paid to any hopes of an early collapse with their excellent death bowlers, Arshdeep Singh in particular being adept at slowing the innings by bowling tight overs in the first half. Furthermore, Jansen’s pace and bounce had MI batting limited their scoring opportunities and making for a tight contest with the tail.

Tim David and Nehal Wadhera had been dismissed consecutively by Chahal to reduce MI to 44/5 but Priyansh Arya and Josh Inglis remained resilient, continuing the chase confidently.

Inglis struck Boult for a six over midwicket to add momentum to their innings, but Bumrah soon struck back with his trademark yorker delivery and dropped Arya off a powerful delivery from Boult – something Kishan should have noticed and corrected instead. Unfortunately for Australia this costly mistake would prove too much.

Ultimately, Arya and Inglis led PBKS to a commanding win, guaranteeing they would join RCB in the IPL final for the first time since 2014. Furthermore, MI failed to defend a total exceeding 200 for the first time ever during this matchup.

After the game, both players exchanged words of appreciation between themselves. Iyer expressed his joy over being part of such a rivalry while offering his best wishes for both teams’ future endeavors.

Ravichandran Ashwin of PBKS added his pride at playing alongside Iyer, while respecting their competition on both sides. He encouraged both teams to keep up the high standard they set both on the field and in the dressing room; both captains vowed to come back stronger next season.

This was their 33rd encounter, with MI leading with 17 victories compared to 16 wins by PBKS. Their 2019 season opener will take place at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai starting at 12:30 pm IST and being broadcast live via Hotstar app and website.
