ODIs
South Africa and India will meet for three One Day International (ODI) matches beginning December 17 at Wanderers, Gqebera and Paarl. This series marks their first encounter since 2023 World Cup where South Africa edged India 2-1 over five games.
India are currently fifth in the ICC One Day International rankings while South Africa are currently sixth. India have faced South Africa 94 times in ODIs; winning 40 and losing 21, while 13 draws occurred between them.
Both teams will look to increase their ranking over time with further matches against each other as they seek to break into the top four by the end of 2016.
India and South Africa both have numerous matches scheduled ahead of their respective ODI series, beginning with India playing West Indies in two-match Test series (October 28-30) before taking on Australia in three Test matches (Nov 30 to Dec 6 across Cuttack, Nagpur and Delhi) followed by five T20Is against India between Dec 14-19.
On December 17, England and South Africa will meet for their inaugural One-Day International at The Wanderers in Johannesburg. Both teams are in impressive form: England won all six white-ball matches against West Indies while South Africa edged Australia out 2-1 at home. Both squads should field their strongest possible lineups for this matchup with both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma looking sharp in recent games.
Due to his hamstring injury, Gautam Gambhir will not travel with India’s squad to South Africa; VVS Laxman will serve as a stand-in coach during their trip instead. Mayank Yadav and Shivam Dube have also been dropped, along with pace bowler Shivam Dube.
South Africa meanwhile will miss Kagiso Rabada, Anrich Nortje and Tabraiz Shamsi who had all previously featured as members.
Live telecast of the match will be available on Sony Sports Network in India and fans can stream it using SonyLIV and FanCode apps. Game time starts at 5:00 PM local time and JioCinema HD channels will also show the action live.
T20Is
India and South Africa cricket rivalries have long been one of the most captivating in international cricket, featuring some of the most memorable matchups ever seen between these nations. From last-over thrillers to breathtaking individual displays of individual brilliance, their rivalry continues to evolve as modern cricket leagues offer players opportunities to test themselves on high-pressure stages while sharpening their skills.
Beginning Friday in Kingsmead in Durban, these teams will square off in a four-match T20 series that will visit Gqeberha and Centurion before culminating at The Wanderers in Johannesburg – India’s first T20 match since their loss against South Africa at the 2024 T20 World Cup final on June 29.
India will aim to rebound after suffering an unexpected defeat in their home Test series against New Zealand in which all three games were won by India 3-0 at home. Their squad is currently going through a transitional stage with many senior players returning to domestic cricket and several young talent making an impression in shorter formats such as T20.
Indian team are still formidable contenders in T20 internationals despite losing several key members such as Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, having won 13 out of 15 T20Is since losing to India back in June and will look to redeem themselves through victory over South Africa this time around.
Both teams have met in 31 Twenty20 Internationals since 2015, with India winning 18 and South Africa 11. Both sides have experienced heartbreak during these games, including high-profile collapses under pressure at events like the 2024 T20 World Cup final. Meanwhile, ODIs provide both teams an opportunity to build momentum ahead of Australia and New Zealand hosting the 2024 World Cup tournament, starting on November 8 with India captain Suryakumar Yadav leading his side against Proteas.
Then three more matches take place December 10, 14, and 17 respectively; coverage for this series can be found both on Sports18 as well as live streaming through JioCinema.
Tests
South Africa national cricket team was first formed in 1907, yet didn’t truly become a powerhouse until 1991 after an ICC ban was lifted. Since then they have enjoyed tremendous success, often holding onto number-one in Test rankings.
The Proteas have earned themselves a sterling reputation in both bowling and batting – particularly their bowlers AB de Villiers and Hansie Cronje. Both men have proven themselves as formidable match winners.
Proteas have had success against India in one-day international cricket, winning 50 of 90 meetings. India have, however, won three out of their four recent meetings against them – something they will hope to do when they face off against South Africa on Friday in Johannesburg.
India earlier this week unveiled their squad for their forthcoming series against South Africa, with Gautam Gambhir no longer travelling due to injury, while Mayank Yadav will not join due to similar reasons. India’s tour will also mark the return of Mohammad Amir who should play two One Day Internationals (ODIs) between Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth.
At the Test matches, several Indian players will be absent due to injury, including Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan. Also absent will be fast bowlers such as Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi and Anrich Nortje; South Africa’s fast bowlers will be led by Wayne Parnell.
As for India’s batsmen, it’s likely that Virender Sehwag will return to the starting lineup alongside Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel in an impressive batting trio. India’s younger players can use this series against South Africa as an opportunity to establish themselves moving forward; performing well during each Test may help India beat Proteas!

South Africa won the 2024 ICC World Cup final by defeating Australia in an emphatic one-sided performance, becoming the first team ever to defeat an opposing Test match during an ICC World Cup final. Since then, South Africa has held off India across all forms of cricket play – including ODIs and T20Is – and are set to square off against each other again starting December 10, with four ODI matches and three T20 games scheduled.
At the first Test match in Colombo, both sides exchanged early wickets before South Africa fell behind on day 2. But due to some brilliant batting from Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers, their visitors eventually recovered their deficit to post an impressive total of 328 runs.
Rain interrupted play on Day Three, which was dominated by spin bowlers from both teams – England taking control after lunch with their bowlers and spinners. South Africa captain Shaun Pollock decided to step aside in favor of batsman Graeme Smith – an individual known for their strong record against India.
After an uninspiring World Cup performance, South Africa showed signs of improvement against India by winning all three ODI matches and eventually the series as well. But in their fourth match against India they lost by chasing down an impossible target of 298; eventually losing by five runs.
Later against New Zealand at Johannesburg one-off Twenty20 match Grant Elliott produced an excellent display by hitting winning runs off Dale Steyn for six to win it all in an exciting finish!
India and South Africa series is one of the most eagerly anticipated matches on 2025 cricket calendar, and is currently leading in both ODI series 3-0, and T20I series 4-1.
