Toss
Sri Lanka won the toss and elected to bat first.
In the second over, Ishwari hit a shot towards mid off which was caught by Samarawickrama and after some miscommunication between Ishwari and Kamilini during their third balls, both players were sent back for duck.
Siraj attempts to trap Samarawickrama LBW with a reverse slice but the umpire denies him this opportunity. When another reverse slice fails, Siraj attempts another reverse cut but gets beat for pace and falls foul of an umpire’s decision.
Kusal Mendis then nudged Lyon towards square leg for a single before driving past long off for another. Axar maintained tight lines, restricting scoring opportunities and conceding only four runs during this over.
Dunith Wellalage follows suit by pulling for one run before steering a yorker towards short mid wicket, before Riyan Parag completes another tidy over, conceding just four runs as Sri Lanka move to 194/4 with Mendis on 33 and Janith Liyanage at 2.
Rohit Sharma (Captain), Shubman Gill (Vice Captain), Virat Kohli and KL Rahul were joined in the field by Shreyas Iyer, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Mohd Siraj Washington Sundar Kuldeep Yadav Mahesh Theekshana.
First Innings
Sri Lanka and India’s inaugural one-day international (ODI) was an engaging contest that showcased all elements of cricket: good batting, outstanding bowling, sensational fielding and plenty of drama. What really stood out to fans, however, was Sri Lanka’s impressive character under pressure; showing that they weren’t here just to win the series.
Charith Asalanka’s team had lost much of its momentum after losing the T20I series and were under considerable strain, yet managed to hold their nerves until the very end of a much-improved performance for a draw on day. Furthermore, this match provided an ideal platform for Sri Lanka’s newly developed fast bowling attack to demonstrate they could keep run rates in check while offering threat at the death.
Wellalage starts his innings by lofting an over the cover boundary to score two runs before adding one more via single from Kuldeep’s final delivery, keeping the score at 212/6.
Sri Lanka have established a good starting position, yet they require quick wickets if they want to avoid collapse, with Wellalage and Nissanka both reaching fifty. Their steady innings will be essential if Sri Lanka are to post a competitive total as the pitch offers greater turn for spinners.
Second Innings
India’s bowlers upped the pressure against Sri Lankan batsmen. Kuldeep managed to pick up Janith Liyanage for just 16 runs as he attempted to pull shot but got hit on his neck instead, only for Charith Asalanka to replace him and share a partnership of 71 runs alongside Janith Liyanage as Sri Lanka were able to achieve a total score of 248-6 from 50 overs.
Beginning their second innings strongly, both sides saw batters try and form partnerships in an attempt to set up big scores. But Indian bowlers proved unrelenting in their pursuit of wickets; Riyan Parag dismissed Avishka Fernando with an outstanding delivery that put hosts into an insurmountable position at half time.
Matt Kuhnemann bowls the opening over after tea. Chandimal comes close to making an entry with his first ball off him but Webster at slip catches it before it hits Chandimal’s leading edge and it flies past. On his second delivery Ramesh hits an exquisite flat square drive through gully for two runs off a fuller delivery from Kuhnemann.
Third Innings
India has struggled to match Sri Lanka’s scoring, and regular wickets have prevented their batsmen from creating partnerships. If Rohit Sharma can get his players going again, India still have an opportunity in this exciting thriller matchup.
Rohit’s initial short ball went for a single; Kuldeep Yadav then followed this up with a wide which Ramesh Mendis took advantage of to score two runs behind square leg. A couple of overs later Charith Asalanka got rid of Shivam Dube and Arshdeep Singh (a key contributor in India’s first innings), leaving just 18 runs to score in their remaining overs.
Kusal Mendis steps up with Ramesh at the crease, keen to drive some runs. Although they only manage two late hits that bring them to 20-1 in 72 overs.
Starc is trying to deprive Mendis of his strike by bowling short and around the stumps, but is missing him with his wide delivery; any attempts at straight driving are met by sharp slip catches that end them quickly.
Final Innings
After an exciting finish, the match ended in a tie. Sri Lanka were in control early on, losing just two openers within the Powerplay, before India responded with some disciplined bowling from Axar Patel and Washington Sundar that kept run-rate under control. Dunith Wellalage and Pathum Nissanka tried building partnerships but failed to gain any acceleration during their final overs.
Kuhnemann got off to an excellent start after drinks with no runs coming off his first over, then unleashed his slow off break to surprise Wellalage who hit out and got caught by Rishabh Pant who then tried for a review but ultimately it wasn’t successful.
Axar stays true to his delivery method by keeping the ball low down and is rewarded with another wicket. Charith Asalanka and Janith Liyanage now occupying the crease together are rotating strikes in an attempt to advance their innings further.
Siraj and Mendis both take singles off each over, showing some resistance but with the field spread to him, Siraj can attack Mendis without much resistance – however Mendis attempts to play him and misses; then appears confused when his attempt at playing him fails; looking towards umpire but decision stands.
