Cricket may not be widely popular in America, but its growing popularity is growing quickly. Though similar to baseball in terms of appearance and gameplay, its unique terms and regulations set it apart. The USNCT has proven it can compete with some of the best in India; their next match against Ireland at Central Broward Park & Broward County Stadium near Miami could see them advance to Super 8 round competition.
India batsmen took an early lead and quickly amassed runs, leaving America reeling after three overs. But after slowing their pace down and Nosthush Kenjige made his late charge count towards reaching a respectable total of 111 runs; though not an assured win, this performance demonstrated their ability to compete with leading international sides.
India’s batsmen proved themselves formidable against an exhausted American bowling attack, when their first ball of an over was met with a doosra (the cricket equivalent of sixes and sevens). Following it came fours, which are equivalent to homers.
By the time the second over ended, India had amassed a healthy lead of 69 runs; however, America kept it close, earning five bonus runs for not starting their over immediately following completion of an over.
The USNCT’s debut in the tournament has drawn the interest of both longtime cricket enthusiasts and casual observers. Many of its players are immigrants from India; others, such as three-wicket hero Saurabh Netravalkar, manage to balance professional careers with cricketing ambitions. The United States’s incredible win against Pakistan at the 2024 T20 World Cup tournament hosted in Dallas by America was an astounding surprise that sent shockwaves through international cricket circles. While not traditionally associated with cricket, America hosts an increasingly influential South Asian community which has propelled Major League Cricket – its professional American cricket league – into prominence. Their victory showed how serious their rivalry really was for advancement within international cricket circles.
This growth also reflects increased interest among American citizens in cricket, spurred by Virat Kohli’s growing fame – an event fuelled by his immense following on social media (over 268 million Instagram followers, more than Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo!). Additionally, Kohli’s rivalry with Pakistan could help further promote interest in cricket across America and increase interest.
Elite cricket in the US is dominated by players of South Asian or Caribbean descent. The USA team features several of these players, such as Saurabh Netravalkar who bowled the final over of their stunning win against Pakistan. He played Under-19 cricket for India but now works in California’s tech industry by day.
Other members of the USA squad are juggling careers with training. Spinner Nosthush Kenjige worked as a biomedical engineer before joining, while bowler Ali Khan sold mobile phones just a few years prior. Coach Stuart Law hails from Australia and hopes for continued development for his side.

USA Cricket has seen a new dawn as their men’s national team earned one-day international status by finishing in the top four places at ICC World Cricket League Division 2 this month. This achievement will allow the USA to play 36 ODIs over 2.5 years – an important step toward qualifying for the 2023 Cricket World Cup and driving an ambitious recruitment drive that may eventually see active international players like former New Zealand allrounder Corey Anderson joining their ranks.
An ODI (one day international) is the highest form of limited-overs international cricket and takes place between two teams at home and away. Similar to Test matches, but featuring additional elements such as batting powerplays and reduced overs. Most often played as stand-alone series between nations or sometimes triangular or quadrangular formats.
The United States broke a world record when they defeated Oman by 122 runs in an ODI tri-series as part of their qualification for ICC World Cricket League Division 2 competition recently. India previously held this record by defeating Pakistan 125 runs during a Rothmans Four-Nations Cup match played at Sharjah in 1985.
USA’s spinners made an impressionful statement against Oman in a one-sided affair. Nosthush Kenjige excelled with five wickets as USA restricted Oman to 65 runs without reply. Milind Kumar, Harmeet Singh and Yasir Mohammed completed the bowling attack.
Monank Patel cemented his place as one of the USA’s finest batsmen with an unbeaten 121 against Canada at Dallas in August 2024 in an One Day International (ODI). Recently, many in the United States had little awareness of cricket. Since American teams surprised everyone with an unexpected victory against Pakistan at the 2024 T20 World Cup tournament, however, more Americans are becoming acquainted with cricket and its traditions.
Will cricket ever make it big in America? Possibly; its unique terminology and gameplay have often left people intrigued with its presence, while tight finishes and memorable upsets have created an appetite among many to see more action-packed matches in their lifetime.
India will face off with USA in their first T20 World Cup match since they defeated Canada on June 1, and it will be tough for them to advance further without winning this match at Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York City. The venue of this game has yet to be decided.
