India was defeated in their five-match women’s T20 series against South Africa at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday despite an admirable effort. Winning the toss and opting to field first, India were unable to contain South African batsmen – Tazmin Brits scored an unbeaten 81 off 56 balls while Marizanne Kapp made her mark before both were dismissed by Radha Yadav in 17 overs. Jemimah Rodrigues and Harmanpreet Kaur tried hard but couldn’t keep up with scoring rates.
Harmanpreet Kaur and India, led by veteran captain Harmanpreet Singh, will look to rebound after their disappointing series defeat to Sri Lanka at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Sunday. India are currently leading in terms of points with four earned from three outings with an superior net run rate, ahead of Sri Lanka with three points but an inferior NRR and South Africa yet unwinnable.
India are strengthened by the inclusion of young wicketkeeper Uma Chetry, who steps in for injured Yastika Bhatia and spinners Renuka Singh Thakur and Arundhati Reddy; visitors have an equally formidable squad led by experienced all-rounder Shafali Verma – both teams will aim to avoid stalemate and seal an important win in this series.

India won the toss and elected to bat first. Although they struggled early on, with only Pratika Rawal and Smriti Mandhana managing to cross fifty. But later in her innings Smriti Mandhana made an extraordinary 78 off 53 balls; her highest ever T20 score.
Nonkululeko Mlaba of South Africa stood out as the stand-out bowler, picking up two wickets during her consecutive overs in the middle overs – both from India, Rawal and Deol – which opened up some hope that South Africa might make a comeback.
However, they fell agonizingly short at the end of the final overs. South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt was visibly disappointed after the match; she praised Tazmin Brits’ incredible innings but said her side had faltered in the closing overs.
Harmanpreet Kaur will lead an Indian side that boasts some excellent batting talent such as Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana, Jemimah Rodrigues and Deepti Sharma in this series against South Africa. Their bowling unit also includes pacer Renuka Singh Thakur and Arundhati Reddy alongside spinner Saika Ishaque, Pooja Vastrakar and Shreyanka Patil to form an effective combination. Both games will be shown live by Sports 18-1 channels within India while T20Is live streamed by JioCinema.
Highlights
Jemimah Rodrigues scored an effortless century to lead India to an emphatic win against South Africa in the inaugural match of their three-match series. At 24-years-old, Jemimah hit 15 fours and sixes to help India post an impressive total of 337 for nine when asked to bat first after Smriti Mandhana and Deepti Sharma also produced half centuries in their teams’ innings.
Early on in their chase for victory, the South Africans got off to an excellent start as Laura Wolvaardt made an unbeaten 47 off 25 balls while joining Tazmin Brits in a 98-run partnership before Tazmin Brits was dismissed in the eighth over by Radha Yadav – leading them only to post 177/4 in 20 overs.
Indian bowlers produced an outstanding performance to prevent South African batsmen from scoring runs at will. Although two wickets fell early on, they managed to keep the run rate going and ensure that their target was reached in plenty of time.
However, starting their innings proved more difficult for the hosts – both Sune Luus and Chloe Tryon fell early, prompting them to bring on specialist spinner Kashvee Gautam who made quick work of the lower order with two strikes in her opening over.
Gautam continued her impressive run with the ball, significantly cutting the run rate in her second over. Unfortunately, however, her next over proved more costly, with both Tryon and Mieke de Klerk dismissed in one over.
Ayabonga Khaka caught an important wicket to bring up 100 runs for her side while Annerie Dercksen hit an assured boundary off the last ball of each over to keep things ticking over.
But India did not take control until the final over. With the match still tied at 176/6 and Gautam having struck again to dismiss Chloe Tryon for only 15 runs, she followed it up by taking another wicket a short while later when non-striker Nonkululeko Mlaba was caught at long-on off Kashvee Gaoutam’s bowling for Nonkululeko Mlaba being caught off Kashvee Gaoutam’s delivery. With this win India gained a 2-0 lead over their series opponents
Prediction
India Women, led by Harmanpreet Kaur and hoping to extend their winning streak against Sri Lanka Women after they dominated in their rain-delayed opener, hold strong chances of taking out this series while Laura Wolvaardt’s side are looking forward to making an impressionful start at this tournament after their cross-format loss against England earlier in the tournament.
As both sides anticipate taking full advantage of Colombo’s pitch, both should play aggressive cricket. Openers will play an essential part in setting the pace early on and must look to score runs quickly as quickly as possible. Later on in the match, middle order must maintain scoring rates to manage scoring rates against powerful hitting by Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma while bowlers will need to watch out for Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma.
The wicket in the stadium should give seamers and spinners something to work with, while spinners have more chance to secure early wickets. India will rely heavily on Sneh Rana, Deepti Sharma and Ayabonga Khaka while South Africa rely more heavily on Nadine de Klerk and Chloe Tryon to take early wickets.
Smriti Mandhana will likely lead India’s batsmen, as she looks to continue her impressive form. Her quick-fire knock of 43 in the previous match showed power and she will hope to replicate that performance here. Similarly, Shreyanka Patil could play an integral part in this matchup.
Indian cricket team will remain unchanged following its win against Sri Lanka, barring any injuries. India boasts an experienced bench that could play a critical role against Sri Lanka; no doubt their women will look forward to adding another success chapter to their history book.
